We went to Aleppo because it is described as a city of gentle charms with good food, lovely guesthouses, and excellent shopping. We did indeed stay at a charming guest house in the heart of the old city, immersed in the souk. Aleppo doesn't seem to see too many tourists and we felt we stood out a bit more than we had in other places, but it was a city well worth the visit. The city also has a crusader castle that we spent half a day touring.
